Back To The Future

This is a speech that I did at youth group last night... I was going to re-write the beginning to make it more like a blog post before I put it up here, but I couldn't think of an alternate way to start it off. Oh well.

Anyhow, without further thought, here is the speech! Even though since your reading it, it's strangely un-speech-like o_O lol. (oops, did I say without further thought there earlier? I meant with out further thought after this :-) )

Yes, yes, here I am. Another day, another speech. I guess that's high school for ya. Projects...projects. And elective subjects. There's one I currently am working on called "College Planner". Ever since I've started it I feel like my life's half over! I'm a freshmen... I apparently am supposed to begin thinking of the future. Several years back had I been asked to start planning for the future I probably would have said something along the lines of "Well let's see... there should be flying cars, cities in the sky... and maybe I'll meet the Jetsons!" . Now I'm apparently supposed to respond with something more along the lines of what school I shall be attending for a higher learning experience. One word: Yee-ikes!

I never really have been a good one for planning things in advance. At least not since I've become a teenager. When I was a little kid, oh boy, yeah, I had it all figured out! I still remember when I was young and mad that I had to go to bed. I had a plan for my future and I made it known at that instant: "When I grow up I'm gonna stay up late and eat as much ice cream as I want!" Yeah, there ya have it, my superior plans for the perfect life. Of course over the years I've discovered by trail and error that this may not be the best thing to do with the rest of my life.

As Senator Bob Dole said in a speech once, "The future is right in front of us." ... of course I fail to see how it could be anywhere else. A funny thing I've realized though is what is the point of planning for the future? The future will never get here because...well, it's the future. By the time it shows up it will be the present and a moment later it's just going to be another addition to the pile of events in the past that some highschool student like myself will have to write essays on 100 years from now.

With that being said, is planning for the future just a waste of time? I wouldn't say that. By the time the next portion of the present rolls around, you'll be happy to have planned ahead. One thing to remember though is don't obsess over it. God is there to see the big picture and has tomorrow all planned out for you. So no matter where you're at in life, just be happy where you are with what you're doing and leave the rest to the Lord - after all, you're always going to be right where He wants you!

Wow. Nicely written.

You must be a good talker. That's a talent that I've always wanted. I guess I've always hoped it would show up in the future... that's yet to come. Or never, we'll see.

Yeah, it's kinda funny... I discovered it by force. I really didn't want to have to do speech projects in school, but I kinda had to anyway and it turns out (according to my youth group friends) that I'm actually good at it =)

Neat. Wish I had just discovered that sort of talent.

Who knows? maybe one day you might. Otherwise, you'll always find something else you're good at!

wow, awsome speach. only problem, i don't see any schools appreciating the God part. lol. and it almost seemed to be a little too much casual. but i mean, for a speech, it's awsome! i loved it and totally agree with you.

Thanks Bo. Yeah, I wouldn't imagine schools appreciating the part on God, but since I was doing it for my youth group, they liked it :-) I'm really more comfortable doing casual kinds of speeches though... all the stiffness of doing what most people think of as a speech just makes me nervous (er, more so than I would be already)
